Document Checklist for Indian Citizens Planning to Marry a Moroccan citizen in Morocco

It is important for Indian citizens intending to marry a Moroccan citizen in Morocco to gather the required documents before you arrive.

It is solely your responsibility to ensure that all necessary papers you bring from your country are correct. Marriage in Morocco shall not assume any responsibility or liability for the adoul’s requirements or any legal implications arising from the use of your documents.

While we have compiled a list of standard documents typically required for foreigners getting married in Morocco, it’s crucial to recognize that the requirements may vary depending on the city you will get married. You must contact an Adoul in the city you plan to marry to confirm the required documents for that city.  Click here for more information.

Please refer to the checklist provided below to ensure you have the appropriate and correct paperwork.

  • Birth Certificate
  • Police Clearance Certificate
  • Letter of Employment
  • Divorce Certificate
  • Conversion to Islam (non Muslim males)
  • Affirmation of Marriage

Original Birth Certificate or a second original issued by the municipal in the city where you were born

You must provide either your original Birth certificate or a second original Birth certificate.

A second original Birth certificate is considered to be legally valid as it will have the original stamp of the issuing authority

Steps to be followed for obtaining a duplicate second original Birth certificate

Visit the office of the municipal corporation in the city where you were born. It is that specific city’s municipal corporation which will have a record of the registration of birth.

In the case of different municipal zones/wards in various areas of a city, you need to visit the zone/ward office of the area where you were born.

You can apply for your birth certificate or the following Individuals can legally acquire your birth certificate on your behalf – Spouse, Parents, Grandparents, brothers or sisters.

Police Clearance Certificate

You will require a police clearance certificate from India to get married in Morocco.

If you are in India the Police Clearance Certificate can be obtained online from the Ministry of External Affairs.

If you are living outside India you should order the Police Clearance Certificate from the Indian High commission or Embassy in the country you are residing.

Please ensure you acquire this document prior to your arrival in Morocco. It may take several weeks to obtain the Police Clearance Certificate, so please allow sufficient time for the waiting period.

If you are a resident of another country and living there, it is advisable to request your partner to visit an adoul (Moroccan marriage officer) in her city to determine whether you need to provide a police record from your country of residence and an Indian Police Certificate, or if the adoul is satisfied with either one of them. It is important to note that each city and district in Morocco may have varying requirements regarding this document. Therefore, before proceeding, you must confirm with the adoul in your partner’s city about their acceptance criteria.

Letter of Employment

Provide a letter of employment from your company on their letterhead.

The letter should state your job details, such as start date, job title, annual salary or hourly pay rate, and it must be signed.

The letter of employment must not be dated more then 3 months old at the time of submitting it to the adoul in Morocco.

Additionally you will need to provide your last 3 payslips – These do not require any translation.

Divorce Certificate

If you have been married before, you will be required to provide your divorce certificate.

Conversion to Islam (non Muslim males)

If you are not Muslim, you will need to convert to Islam and provide a certificate. This can be done in Morocco.

Affirmation of Marriage

The Indian Embassy in Morocco, along with all other Indian Embassies DO NOT provide an Affirmation of MARRIAGE certificate. However, the Moroccan courts require this document for marriage purposes within Morocco. Refer to this link for crucial information on obtaining the required document.

If any of your documents are not originally issued in Arabic they will require court certified Arabic translations in Morocco.
